China Mobile to Sell HTC Android Smartphones in China

Taiwanese mobile phone maker HTC recently announced that the company has reached an agreement with China Mobile for selling Smartphones based on Google's open source platform, Android, in China, the Xinhua News reported on May 26. The HTC Android phone, codenamed OPhone, is slated for commercialization in Japan some time around June 2009, with an expected price tag round 5,000 RMB (US$735.3; US$1 = 6.8 RMB). According to the same source, OPhone is based on HTC Magic model and pre-integrated with China Mobile's software.

Meanwhile, HTC stated that China Mobile will not be the exclusive provider of the phones in China and the company will likely establish similar collaborations with other telecom operators such as China Unicom and China Telecom. Furthermore, the company also revealed its plan to launch TD-SCDMA (Time Division-Synchronous Code Division Multiple Access) phones based on the Android platform but did not disclose any further information regarding the said phone.
